Prices rocket at Tesco's in Carmarthen - every little helps!
Do you drink coffee? If you do, do you have it black or white? I sometimes buy these mini pots of coffee complement - if you haven't seen them before, there is a picture a little further down the page. Imagine my surprise when I was going to buy a new pack in Teso's in Carmarthen the other day - the price display on the shelf said 84 pence! Why surprised? Not so long ago I bought them for only 62 pence. You might say that this is only a 22 pence increase - so what is all this about? These 22 pence represent a massive 35.48% price rise! I put them back on the shelf and went to Morrisons instead. Guess what .... they were still 62 pence at Morrisons, but I still didn't by them. Why not? Because I found a similar product by Kerigold on a different shelf at Morrisons for only 49pence.
I don't go around supermarkets checking all the prices (maybe somebody should!) but there is another product that stands out. Do you know the Frijj milk shakes? They used to be 74 pence at Tesco's, now they are 99 pence. Not as big a jump as the coffee complement above, but still a massive 33.78% increase . At Morrisons they are still 74 pence - and if you buy 3 you get them for a pound - pay just a penny more than at Tesco's and get 3 times as much for you money. Great!
This does make me wonder what is happening here. Has the the cost to Tesco's increased so much that they had to put the prices up? I doubt it - such an increase by a producer is not likely and if it had happened it would effect all supermarkets - not just Tesco. To me it looks as if Tesco just adds a few pence to products we buy every day, maybe even pick up without looking at the price because we know it. I know they get away with it, because yesterday, when I walked past the shelf where the coffee whitener sits, there were only two left. Tesco - helping you spend less every day!?!

I have not asked the supermarkets for comments, but I can imagine what they would be:
Tesco: "well .... every little helps"
Morrisons: "more reasons to shop at Morrisons"
