A Walk around Kidwelly Castle

Although being an ancient town, Kidwelly grew significantly during the industrial revolution, as did many other towns in south Wales. The town was home to a large brickworks and tinworks. Little evidence now exists of such activities since the closure of the industrial works, with the exception of Kidwelly Industrial Museum.

Today, the town has adapted to cater for tourism and retail rather than dense industry and boasts historical attractions and beautiful countryside.

Attractions include Kidwelly Castle, founded in 1106, a fourteenth century bridge and gate, the former quay (now a nature reserve), a Norman parish church and the above mentioned industrial museum.

Kidwelly Castle is truly one of the great castles of Wales. The impressive outer walls contain inner fortifications with four towers protecting a central core. It stands overlooking the River Gwendraeth and has many spiral staircases to explore and walls to walk (carefully!!)

Kidwelly Castle was used as a location for the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, appearing in the very first scene after the titles. After our first view of King Arthur and Patsy, a very misty establishing shot shows Kidwelly as their destination. However, the following close up filming was done at Doune Castle in Scotland.

The castle is relatively well-preserved, and is managed by Cadw.
