I see the Thomson holiday advert at the top of the page and I wonder if you have any insider information which could confirm or deny the rumours I've heard. Apparently Thomsons are preparing to offer an activity holiday in Carmarthen -

First option (2 star)

- You select the area in the town where you want to dig a hole
- you are supplied with barriers, bollards, safety clothing and a pickaxe and shovel
- you dig a hole in the designated area, make any desired alterations within the hole, and then make good, using materials provided by yourself

Second option (5 star)
- You select the area in the town where you want to dig a hole
- you are supplied with barriers, bollards, safety clothing, excavating and earth moving equipent, also with all materials and machinery to re-surface the road. You will also receive a complimentary set of traffic lights.
You will dig a hole, using the equipment provided, make any alterations deemed to be necessary within the hole, and then resurface the road using the supplied material and equipment.

Option one will only be recommended to the most active physically strong participants.

Apparently Thomsons is also considering to hold competitions between teams of hole diggers.

According to the rumours Carmarthenshire County Council is looking forward to the promotion. Holes in Carmarthen's road surfaces have over the past few years been the most effective of traffic calming measures trialled in the town.

Sorry Horatio - can't help you there, but it sure seems a fantastic idea. If it ever comes on the market please let me know .... I'm a bit of an expert in digging my own hole!

Yes, really annoying these building works, again and again, and in the same places. Makes you wonder why they can't co-ordinate this better. Don't know if this isn't possible due to the nature of the various jobs or if it is just a matter of having a certain amount of money to spend and if they don't then they won't get the same budget in the next year. I don't think other than budgetary control there is any real accountability with many organisations - here, this is your pot of money - spend it and you'll get the same or more next year - don't spend it and we'll cut your budgie!

The present planning ideas seem to be forget the history of Carmarthen with the ancient holes and burrows leading from King Street to the Jail now thankfully the home of our Councillors and their employees who rule the town from Llanelli . Bring back the Scaffold to the old jail and make the inmates accountable , but then of course you could not watch the hangings from The Mount as in olden days as it has been demolished with the backing of the Councillors and their vociferous employees who seem to rule the roost . Carmarthen was the West Wales Capital of Roman Britain in about 78AD as Maridunum and was the County Market and Mart Town but that has gone with Tescoville .
